Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 7 is the product of Mitchell's Glengyle Distillery, re-opened in 2004, after closing in 1925.
The historic Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown produces Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 7. The Mitchell family originally founded the distillery. The J&A Mitchell group has owned it since rebuilding and resuming production in 2004.
Glengyle Distillery completes every stage of whisky production on-site. Its sister distillery, Springbank, carries out traditional floor malting. The team bottles each release in Campbeltown’s bottling hall. Sharing both its production team and schedule with Springbank Distillery, Glengyle operates for a limited period of around three months each year, typically from October to December.
Heavily Peated Kilkerran, a departure from the typically lightly peated single malt, releases twice a year at cask strength, reaching around 45PPM.
The Heavily Peated Batch 7 matured in 90% bourbon and 10% sherry casks.
It was bottled in 2022 at 59.1% ABV and there is no added colour and no chill filtering.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Creamy butterscotch and caramel notes in the beginning, with the development of notes of rye bread and tea leaf.
Palate: The palate reveals a familiar oiliness and smokiness, featuring notes of Ibérico ham and brandy snaps.
Finish: A gentle finish, there are notes of lemon sherbet, honeycomb and mint, with peat smoke then carrying through to the finish.
