Important Information

ⓘ You must be aged 18 or above to buy alcohol in the UK.

The  grapes for the Matawhero Church House Barrel Fermented Chardonnay grow in two select parcels from the Tietjen vineyard in the Hexton Hills or "Golden Slopes" appellation of Gisborne.

The site has had a rich history in producing award-winning Chardonnay for over 20 years.  It utilises the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay.

The vines achieved good ripeness and with low yields came excellent flavours and weight to the fruit.

A portion of the grapes were hand harvested and some machine harvested.  With the machine harvested grapes, the juice cool fermented in tanks till dry and then underwent full malolactic fermentation and spent 4 months on lees. The hand-picked fruit was gently pressed and fermented in a combination of American and European barrels.

Matawhero has crafted exceptional wines in Gisborne since 1975, embracing its unique terroir, coastal breezes, and dry farming. With a legacy of heritage, sustainability, and craftsmanship, this hidden gem is now firmly on the world stage.

Enjoy Matawhero Church House Barrel Fermented Chardonnay with creamy sauces in chicken or seafood dishes, as well as cheeses.
